Editor's Note

Welcome to the Early-June issue of Strategies for Career Success. Memorial Day weekend always reminds me of a road trip I took with relatives to Washington, DC in 1990. It was a very moving experience being in DC during that weekend, as my uncle was a casualty of the Vietnam War. I am so grateful for all of the men and women who serve in the armed forces to protect our freedom.

This issue of Strategies for Career Success includes an article on "Hitting the Ground Running" which is the title of a book I'm currently reading. It's basically a manual for new leaders which includes tips from some top CEO's.

I've also included a list of blogs that feature tips on career, job search, and leadership. And, also be sure to read the fourth truth about how Twitter can benefit your job search.

Are you getting interviews, but not turning them into job offers? You may need to brush up on your interviewing skills. Don't miss our June special offer of 30 minutes free with the purchase of a Power-Hour interview coaching session. Learn more below. Check out my blog where I have some tips on what do do before, during, and after an interview.

Become a Facebook fan of Pathways Career Success Strategies, LLC, where I share additional career and leadership tips to help you move up, move forward, or move on in your career.

Hit the Ground Running

In his book, Hit the Ground Running: A Manual for New Leaders, author Jason Jennings, identified nine of the nation's best performing CEO's from 2001-2007. These CEO's were at the helm of companies that included, the J.M. Smucker Company (the jam company), Humana, Inc., (health insurance) and Staples (office products). Tim and Richard Smucker, Co-CEO's of the J.M. Smucker Company outline their rules for achieving success in business:

  1. Don't have secret strategies - make sure everyone knows the strategy and knows their role.

  2. Have a culture that promises people a better tomorrow based on their good work.

  3. Don't be content; you're responsible for making things better.

  4. Doubt your own infallibility.

  5. Have faith. Believe in a higher force.

  6. Don't do what you know only for material rewards. Be called to your life's work and have a purpose.

  7. Laugh and have a sense of humor.

Whether you’re a leader with a title, or one without, or an aspiring leader, the above rules can guide you to success in the workplace.

Fourth Truth About Twitter to Benefit Your Job Search

In this issue of Strategies of Career Success, I'm sharing the fourth truth about how Twitter can benefit your job search. This fourth truth is from the book The Twitter Job Search Guide, by authors Susan Britton Whitcomb, Chandlee Bryan, and Deb Dib. The fourth truth is: Connect to the Hidden Job Market and Insider Contacts.

You can search Twitter or sites related to Twitter for the names of hiring managers, influencers, potential co-workers, or people in the news affiliated with your target employers. Use LinkedIn to find company and insider contacts, and then follow them on Twitter. It's important to look like an insider rather than an outsider. Remember, employers like to hire people they know or people that come referred to them. Become an insider by using Twitter.

Check past and current issues of this eNewsletter to learn the other 9 truths.
