Editor's Note

Welcome to the Early-March issue of Strategies for Career Success.  The workshop I presented at Great Basin College in Elko, Nevada last week went well. While the economy is struggling and tourism (and gambling) is down in Nevada, the northeastern portion of that state, including Elko, is doing very well due to several gold mines in that area.

This issue of Strategies for Career Success includes an article on creating a networking resume. This strategy will make it easier for others to help you in your job search.

Also, learn how to increase your productivity by improving your email habits.

Don't miss our March special offer. With the purchase of resume development, also receive a customized cover letter at no charge. Read below for more information.

Creating a Networking Resume

Shane Smith

If seventy percent of the jobs are found from networking, somehow, job seekers need to communicate better and it starts with NOT sending people your resume when networking. (Yes, keep your full resume to apply for jobs).

I challenge anyone to print a copy of your resume, hand it to someone who DOES NOT know you and then, as the author, you take the resume away from them and ask them these questions.

  1. What type of job am I looking? (Your focus-Admin, IT, Sales, Finance, etc.)
  2. What are some possible job titles that I’m looking for?
  3. What industry am I looking to work in?
  4. What are my target companies? (can change monthly as needed)
  5. What can you as the reader do to help? (Be specific.)

Improve your networking skills now by being able to answer the questions above, and I would URGE you to write them down. You will be able then to use this in your elevator speech, the “tell me about yourself”, the networking meeting and more. But more importantly, you will use this type of information to make a one page networking resume or marketing plan. And when you’re finished, you will make it SO MUCH easier for others to network with you and help you in your job transition.

Your NEW networking resume or marketing plan now tells others what you’re looking for and now, your new networking contacts are ready to help!

Some additional tips.

  • No need to list your mailing address on your networking resume.
  • 77 Guerrilla Job Search Secrets By Kevin Donlin and David E. Perry
    • FREE copy of their breakthrough audio seminar, “Guerrilla Job Search Secrets!” at - www.GM4JH.com/freecd Or if you Google Guerrilla resume templates, you may learn more.
  • Always, treat networking time as a “gift” from others and say thank you. Want to stand out more, mail, yes U.S. Mail them a thank you card.
  • Circle back. If someone has helped by giving you a contact name, circle back and let them know what happened. With technologies today, it’s easy.

Top 10 Best Email Habits

Improving your email habits can drastically increase your productivity. Like any new approach, these take focus and practice. But after awhile, they will become habits that support you.

1. Check email only at scheduled times for a specified amount of time. Twice a day for 30-60 minutes works well for many. Unplug until the next scheduled time.

2. Unsubscribe relentlessly. Make sure you receive only the things you really want to read and DO read.

3. Reduce the amount of routed email (i.e., cc'd from colleagues, particular groups, co-workers) to only that which is essential.

4. "Slash and burn" on your first pass through your inbox. Use the second pass for replies and other follow-up actions.

5. Empty your inbox every day and keep it that way. Delete most and file the rest.

6. Include all of your contact information in your signature line--phone, fax, website--so that others don't have to hunt for this information.

7. One topic, one subject. Change the subject line when conversation turns to another topic, and break up multiple topics into separate emails for easy filing and recall.

8. Count to five before clicking "Send." Make sure your email is clear and represents what you really want to say to avoid a lot of back-and-forth later.

9. Include in your replies the original context of the email so you (and others) don't have to hunt for it later.

10. Resist the temptation to check your email more than your scheduled times! It's a simple step but has a profound effect on productivity.
