This issue of Strategies for Career Success includes an article titled "Personal Marketing and Lessons from the Recession." Also included in this issue is the third truth about using Twitter to benefit your job search. It's amazing how many ways Twitter can help you land your next job.

Personal Marketing and Lessons from the Recession

The ExecuNet report re-affirms the necessity of managing one's online brand and Internet presence:
  • To get a competitive edge, as recruiters turn more and more to online research, executives [and others in a job search] need to establish online evidence of the whole package of the value they bring to an organization.
  • Executives [and others] should keep in mind that recruiters also learn information online that may extend beyond the resumes of executives they are considering.
  • Ninety percent of recruiters now search online regularly to gain a complete picture of a candidate, such as thought leadership, community service activities, or published articles.
Lessons Learned from the Recession and Recovery:
  • The unstable economy is a reminder to continually cast your sights on the next career move.
  • The reality of the combination of high unemployment and few advertised senior-level positions in this recession demands advanced methods for building a solid career path that includes new tools, trends, and rules of engagement.
  • The most successful leaders are not deterred by the headlines, but instead become proactive and redesign their careers, investing in their networks to be prepared for the next turnaround.
  • Complacency is not an option for job seekers expecting to be gainfully employed. Rather, responsibility falls on the shoulders of the executive (and professionals).
  • The successful executive, anticipating change, plans ahead and develops a strong board of advisors with trusted peers, thus remaining in control of his own career destiny.

Client Comments

"I worked with Joan on my strategic and leadership development skills for 90 days when I was forming a new organization with a new team.  This was a challenging time for me.  Joan provided insightful support and guided me to the kind of team development and conflict management tools that are going to be key to our teams success.  She provided superb support and gave me the kind of feedback that helped me execute the discipline to improve. I am growing to be the kind of leader that I admired and wanted to emulate.

I have recommended Joan to one of my friends who is making a career transition. I believe in the value of Joan's coaching so strongly that I paid for my friend's coaching sessions myself.   It is great to see my friends growing in confidence through Joan's coaching."

Third Truth About Twitter to Benefit Your Job Search

In this issue of Strategies of Career Success, I'm sharing the third truth about how Twitter can benefit your job search. This third truth is from the book The Twitter Job Search Guide, by authors Susan Britton Whitcomb, Chandlee Bryan, and Deb Dib. The third truth is: Locate Job Leads. Check past and current issues of this eNewsletter to learn the other 9 truths.

There are many job sites that interface with Twitter and they include: TweetMyJobs.com and TwitterJobSearch.com.  To get on the radar of recruiters, send a message to a recruiter who has tweeted relevant job postings. This will give you a better opportunity to stand out from the crowd of candidates. For example, you could write "Just emailed my resume for product mgr. opening, I've helped similar co's gain double-digit market share. Will follow up early next week." Note that the key here is the hint of value to come and the initiative to follow up.
